Treatment for Cervical Cancer That Has Spread
Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer that affects women throughout the world. When not caught early, it can spread and enter into stage 2B and beyond, known as advanced cervical cancer.-
Hysterectomy
-
A hysterectomy is a one of the most common treatments for cervical cancer. During a routine hysterectomy, the uterus is removed, but the ovaries are left in tact. Radical hysterectomies not only remove the uterus, but also the upper part of the vagina and internal lymph nodes.
Chemotherapy
-
Patients receive chemotherapy to kill cancer. The amount of time patients receive treatments is unique to each patient. Hair loss, fatigue and gastrointestinal distress are all common side effects of chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy
-
Radiation therapy is a common treatment for advanced cervical cancer, and is also used for patients who have cancer that has returned. Doses are typically based on the size of the patients' tumor; with side effects including infertility, hair loss, dryness and fibrosis.
Is It Ever Too Late for Treatment?
-
Advanced cervical cancer treatments greatly depend on the stage of the cancer and if its spreading. When it reaches stage 4B, meaning it affects vital organs such as the liver or lungs, it cannot usually be successfully treated.
Prevention
-
Cervical cancer is a highly preventable cancer. Routine, yearly pap smears help doctors catch early abnormalities of the cervix before cancer develops. Cervical abnormalities detected by annual pap smears are generally 100 percent treatable.
