What is the medical condition cervical dysplasia?

Cervical dysplasia is a condition in which the cells of the cervix, the opening of the uterus, appear abnormal. These abnormal cells may be precancerous, meaning they have the potential to develop into cancer if left untreated.

Cervical dysplasia is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. HPV can infect both men and women, but it is more likely to cause cervical dysplasia in women.

Risk factors for cervical dysplasia include:

* Having multiple sexual partners

* Having sex at a young age

* Having a weakened immune system

* Smoking

* Using oral contraceptives for a long time

Symptoms of cervical dysplasia often do not occur until the condition has progressed to cancer. However, some women may experience:

* Vaginal bleeding between periods

* Heavier periods than usual

* Pelvic pain

* Pain during intercourse

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor right away. Cervical dysplasia can be diagnosed with a Pap smear, a simple test that can detect abnormal cells in the cervix. If cervical dysplasia is diagnosed, your doctor may recommend treatment to remove the abnormal cells and prevent them from developing into cancer.

Treatment for cervical dysplasia may include:

* Cryotherapy, which freezes the abnormal cells

* Laser surgery, which uses a laser to remove the abnormal cells

* Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), which uses a thin wire loop to remove the abnormal cells

Cervical dysplasia is a serious condition, but it is one that can be treated successfully if it is caught early. If you are at risk for cervical dysplasia, it is important to see your doctor regularly for Pap smears.
