Which virus causes cervical cancer?

The vast majority of cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. HPV is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract and is responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer. There are over 100 different types of HPV, and some are more likely to cause cancer than others. HPV 16 and HPV 18 are the two types most commonly associated with cervical cancer, and they are responsible for about 70% of all cases. Other types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer include HPV 31, HPV 33, HPV 35, HPV 39, HPV 45, HPV 51, HPV 52, HPV 56, HPV 58, HPV 59, and HPV 66.
