Difference Between Chemotherapy & Other Infused Cancer Drugs

Even though chemotherapy is one of the most common cancer treatments, it is often given in combination with other infused cancer drugs. Research has led to the development of new drugs that help fight cancer and produce minimal side effects.
  1. Chemotherapy

    • Cancer cells grow and divide very quickly. Because chemotherapy drugs seek out and destroy fast-growing cells, they attack cancer cells but also the body's normal fast-growing cells.

    Targeted Therapy

    • Target therapy drugs attack cancer cells and do little damage to normal cells. Target therapy drugs interrupt the inner workings of the cancer cells, stopping the cells from growing and spreading.

    Inhibitors

    • Angiogenesis inhibitor therapy drugs prevent new blood vessels from developing in the tumor. Without a good blood supply, the tumor cannot grow.

    Biological Therapy

    • Biological therapy drugs help your immune system fight cancer. Biological therapy also is used to help control side effects of other cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

    Side Effects

    • Chemotherapy causes side effects because your healthy cells are killed along with the cancer cells. Other infused drugs do little or no damage to healthy cells.

    Combination Therapy

    • Chemotherapy is the only infused cancer drug that kills cancer cells, so most treatment plans include a combination of chemotherapy and other infused drugs.
