How to Fight Infections While on Chemo
Chemotherapy, or "chemo", is the use of drugs to treat cancer. Avoiding Infections
-
1
Wash your hands often, especially before and after eating, after going to the restroom, and after touching potentially contaminated items and surfaces.
-
2
Follow your immunization schedule. Your health care provider will recommend the proper type and schedule of vaccines to boost your immune system.
-
3
Consult with a nutritionist to assist with your dietary needs while on chemo. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, which contain essential nutrients for good health. If the chemo has caused difficulty with eating, your nutritionist may recommend that you supplement your diet with vitamin and mineral supplements.
-
4
Get plenty of sleep and exercise. Both will help boost your immune system.
Fighting Infections
-
5
Medications such as antibiotics may be prescribed by your health care provider before or during chemotherapy to fight off infections. Antibiotics may also be prescribed as your body recovers from the side effects of the chemo to prevent infections as you're regaining your strength.
-
6
Maintain a healthy diet to give your body the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients it needs for energy and to keep the body fueled to fight the infection.
-
7
Keep a positive attitude and reduce stress where possible. Keeping stress at a minimum prevents the release of stress hormones like cortisol, which, by nature, depress your immune system and can delay recovery from an infection.
