What is benzocycloprine?
Benzocycloprine, sold under the brand name Onsior among others, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class that is used to relieve pain in dogs. It is a cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor that works by reducing the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in the inflammatory response. Benzocycloprine has been shown to be effective in reducing pain and inflammation in dogs with osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders. It is typically administered orally once or twice a day.
Common side effects of benzocycloprine in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. More serious side effects, such as kidney failure, liver damage, and gastrointestinal bleeding, can also occur. Benzocycloprine should not be used in dogs with a history of gastrointestinal ulcers, kidney or liver disease, or bleeding disorders. It should also be used with caution in dogs with heart disease, diabetes, or a history of seizures.
Benzocycloprine is a potent NSAID that can be effective in relieving pain in dogs with osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders. However, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects of this drug before using it in your dog.
