What are some treatment options besides chemo?
- Surgery is a treatment option for many types of cancer. Surgery can be used to remove a tumor, as well as lymph nodes and other tissues that may be affected by cancer.
- Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays or other forms of radiation to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy can be used before surgery to shrink a tumor, after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells, or on its own as the main treatment for cancer.
- Hormone therapy is a treatment option for hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. Hormone therapy works by blocking the effects of hormones that help the cancer grow.
- Targeted therapy is a type of treatment that uses drugs that specifically target cancer cells. Targeted therapy is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
- Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that uses the body's own immune system to fight cancer. Immunotherapy works by helping the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells.
- Palliative care is a type of care that focuses on improving the quality of life for people with cancer. Palliative care can include such services as pain management, nutrition support, and emotional support.
