What Is Colonoscopy Intake?

A colonoscopy is an examination of the colon using a small camera on a tube passed through the anus. Colonoscopies detect growths associated with cancer in the rectum. Colonoscopy intake refers to food and drink that are OK and not OK to "take in" before the procedure.
  1. General Diet Before Procedure

    • Two to four days before the colonoscopy, stop intake of all iron supplements. Iron changes the color of the intestines, which makes it harder for the camera to detect irregularities. Large quantities of clear water are encouraged as they clean your intestines of stool before the procedure. This allows the camera to move freely during the examination.

    Avoid Before Procedure

    • Red and purple-colored liquids should be avoided before a colonoscopy because these liquids can stain the intestines, making it difficult to tell blood from food dye. Most solid food, including dairy and red meat, is prohibited the day before a colonoscopy because the presence of stool can make growth or ulcer detection difficult.

    OK Before Procedure

    • Although solid food is generally prohibited days before a colonoscopy, certain foods in small quantities are allowed. Eat boiled, skinless chicken and unrefined bread if you must have something the day before the procedure. Soup and broth are also OK. Keep in mind that all food intake, including liquids, generally cease four hours before a colonoscopy.
