What to During Colorectal Cancer Surgery
During Surgery* You will be given general anesthesia so you will be asleep and pain free during the surgery.
* The surgeon will make an incision in your abdomen and remove the cancerous tumor and surrounding tissue. In some cases the lymph node around the tumor may be removed as well The remaining healthy portions of your colon or rectum will be reattached.
* The length of the surgery will vary depending on the extent of cancer.
* If you are having a colostomy or ileostomy, the surgeon will create a stoma, which is an opening in the abdomen that allows stool or urine to pass out of the body.
* After the surgery is complete, you will be moved to the recovery room where you will be closely monitored.
