What is a colon and rectal surgeon?

A colon and rectal surgeon is a medical professional who specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. These surgeons are also known as proctologists. Colon and rectal surgeons are responsible for diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions, including colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, and anal fistulas. They may also perform surgeries to remove polyps from the colon or rectum, or to create an ostomy (an opening in the abdomen that allows waste to pass out of the body). Colon and rectal surgeons typically have a medical degree and have completed a residency in general surgery, as well as additional training in colon and rectal surgery. They are certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
