Alternative Colon Cancer Treatments

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (also known as the colon). Most cases of colon cancer begin as small clumps of cells called polyps. Over time, these can become cancerous. Colon cancers require routine screenings to identify them since polyps are rarely symptomatic or cause problems. A small percentage of colon cancers are hereditary, while others are caused by a wide range of factors including old age, obesity, a low-fiber diet, smoking, alcohol or a sedentary lifestyle.
  1. Traditional Medical Treatments for Colon Cancer

    • Traditional treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Surgery may be a small procedure such as removing a polyp during a colonoscopy, removing a cancerous lesion or removing a section of the colon. Targeted drug therapy, chemotherapy and/or radiation may accompany surgery.

    CAAT Treatments for Colon Cancer

    • One common alternative treatment for colon cancer is CAAT. CAAT is controlled amino acid therapy that replaces the proteins in the patient's diet. The idea behind it is that it deprives cancer cells of the nutrients needed to grow while nourishing healthy cells. In addition to a decrease in protein intake, CAAT also limits glucose because it has been found to reduce the size of cancerous tumors. Patients who use CAAT should find an alternative medicine specialist who is familiar with this treatment. The specialist will devise amino acid treatments specifically formulated for the individual. The supplements are usually taken twice daily in conjunction with a healthy low-carbohydrate diet.

    Supplement Treatments for Colon Cancer

    • Many patients choose to supplement traditional treatments with herbal therapies. Using herbal treatments only is not recommended; typically, doctors will suggest alternative therapies to complement traditional ones.

Herbal treatments can be found at health food stores, from alternative doctors and practitioners, and traditional Chinese medicine specialists. Supplements used to treat colon cancer include reishi mushroom extract (popular throughout Chinese history for cancer treatment), vitamin D, bioflavonoids (anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties are associated with these), calcium (said to protect against polyps from turning into cancer) and curcumin (an extract from turmeric that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties).

Gerson Therapy Treatment for Colon Cancer

    • Gerson therapy has been in use for many years in the treatment of cancer. While books and descriptions of Gerson therapy are available, most alternative medical experts suggest finding a Gerson clinic to implement therapies. Gerson therapy is a combination of alternative treatments including raw juicing, supplements, herbs, coffee enemas and a restricted diet.
