How to Use Fecal Immunochemical Test

Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a test that detects blood in the stool, which is a sign for colorectal cancer. The chemical in the test card reacts with the hemoglobin molecules found in red blood cells.   Ask your doctor to send you a Fecal Immunochemical Test kit. Read carefully the instructions provided by the test kit on how to collect specimen.

  Use the test after you have a bowel movement. Use one of the brushes provided by the test kit to brush the tool. Put the brush into one of the slots in the test card. Write your name and the date on the kit.

  Repeat the test 3 times using a different bowel movement each time. This increases the accuracy of the test.

  Send the test kit back to the laboratory, preferably within 2 weeks of the first sample.
