What Is La Crosse Encephalitis?

La Crosse encephalitis (LACV) is a mosquito-borne viral infection of the central nervous system that can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and confusion. In some cases, LAC can lead to more serious neurological complications, such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

LAC is caused by the La Crosse virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The virus is most commonly found in the Midwest and Northeastern United States, but it has also been reported in other parts of the country. LAC typically occurs during the summer and early fall when mosquitoes are most active.

Most people who are infected with LAC will experience only mild symptoms and will recover fully without treatment. However, in some cases, LAC can lead to more serious neurological complications, which can be fatal or cause permanent damage.

Symptoms of LAC

The symptoms of LAC can vary from person to person. Some people may experience only mild symptoms, such as:

- Fever

- Headache

- Nausea

- Vomiting

- Muscle weakness

- Confusion

In some cases, LAC can lead to more serious neurological complications, such as:

- Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)

- Meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord)

- Seizures

- Paralysis

- Coma

- Death

Treatment for LAC

There is no specific treatment for LAC. Treatment is focused on relieving symptoms and preventing complications. Treatment may include:

- Rest

- Fluids

- Pain relievers

- Anti-inflammatory drugs

- In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary

Prevention of LAC

The best way to prevent LAC is to avoid mosquito bites. Some tips for avoiding mosquito bites include:

- Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin.

- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors.

- Stay indoors during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn).

- Remove standing water from your property, such as bird baths and kiddie pools.

- Use mosquito netting over your bed.

If you are experiencing symptoms of LAC, it is important to see a doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent serious complications.
