What is NASH disease?

NASH, or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, is a liver disease that is characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver, along with inflammation and damage to liver cells. It is a progressive disease that can lead to scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) and liver failure.

NASH is often associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol. It is also more common in people who have a family history of liver disease.

The symptoms of NASH can vary depending on the severity of the disease. In some people, NASH may not cause any symptoms. In others, it can cause fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and weight loss.

NASH is diagnosed with a liver biopsy, which is a procedure in which a small piece of liver tissue is removed and examined under a microscope.

There is no cure for NASH, but it can be managed with lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. Medications may also be prescribed to help manage the inflammation and damage caused by NASH.
