What is celeacs disease?

Celiac disease is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When someone with celiac disease eats gluten, their immune system attacks the lining of their small intestine. This can damage the villi, the small finger-like projections that line the small intestine and help absorb nutrients.

Celiac disease can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

* Abdominal pain

* Diarrhea

* Gas

* Bloating

* Weight loss

* Fatigue

* Iron-deficiency anemia

* Vitamin B12 deficiency

* Skin rashes

* Infertility

* Miscarriage

* Tooth enamel defects

Celiac disease can also lead to serious health problems, such as osteoporosis, autoimmune thyroid disease, and lymphoma.

The only way to treat celiac disease is to follow a strict gluten-free diet. This means avoiding all foods that contain gluten, including wheat, barley, rye, and any products made with these ingredients. There are many gluten-free foods available, so it is possible to eat a healthy and balanced diet without gluten.

Celiac disease is a lifelong condition, but it can be managed with a gluten-free diet. If you think you may have celiac disease, talk to your doctor.
