How is mono spread?

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), causes infectious mononucleosis (mono).

The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person's saliva. This can happen through kissing, sharing drinks or food, using the same toothbrush, or coming into contact with an infected person's cough or sneeze.

Mono cannot be spread through casual contact, such as shaking hands or sharing a bathroom.

The virus can also be transmitted through blood transfusions or organ transplants, but this is rare.
