What is the most numerous leukocyte?
Neutrophils are important for fighting infection. They are attracted to sites of infection by chemicals that are released by bacteria and other microorganisms. Once they reach the site of infection, neutrophils engulf and destroy the microorganisms. Neutrophils also release chemicals that help to kill bacteria and other microorganisms.
Neutrophils are also involved in the inflammatory response. They release chemicals that cause blood vessels to dilate and become more permeable, allowing fluid and other cells to leak into the tissue. This helps to bring more immune cells to the site of infection and helps to clear away dead cells and debris.
