What is the role of liver?

4. Carbohydrate Metabolism: The liver plays a role in maintaining blood glucose levels. It stores excess glucose as glycogen through a process called glycogenesis. When blood glucose levels drop, the liver converts glycogen back into glucose and releases it into the bloodstream (glycogenolysis).

5. Fat Metabolism: The liver is involved in various aspects of fat metabolism. It processes dietary fats, synthesizes fatty acids and cholesterol, and helps transport and store fats.

7. Filtering of Blood: The liver receives blood from the digestive organs through the portal vein. It filters the blood, removing bacteria, toxins, and worn-out red blood cells. Damaged red blood cells are broken down, and their components are recycled.

8. Cholesterol Regulation: The liver participates in regulating cholesterol levels in the body. It removes excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and converts it into bile salts or transports it to other tissues for utilization.

9. Metabolism of Hormones and Medications: The liver metabolizes and breaks down various hormones, medications, and other foreign substances, rendering them inactive and preparing them for excretion.

10. Immune Functions: The liver plays a role in the immune system. It produces immune proteins, such as complement proteins, and participates in immune surveillance, capturing and removing pathogens and foreign particles from the bloodstream.
