What is chronic biliary cirrhosis?

Chronic biliary cirrhosis is a liver disease that is caused by the long-term inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts. The bile ducts are small tubes that carry bile, a fluid that helps digest fats, from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine.

Causes

Chronic biliary cirrhosis can be caused by a number of different conditions, including:

* Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC): This is an autoimmune disease that affects the bile ducts. The immune system mistakenly attacks the bile ducts, causing inflammation and scarring.

* Secondary biliary cholangitis: This is a condition that is caused by damage to the bile ducts from another condition, such as gallstones, a tumor, or an infection.

* Other causes: Chronic biliary cirrhosis can also be caused by certain genetic disorders, medications, and alcohol abuse.

Symptoms

The symptoms of chronic biliary cirrhosis can vary depending on the severity of the disease. Some of the most common symptoms include:

* Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

* Dark urine

* Light-colored stools

* Fatigue

* Nausea and vomiting

* Abdominal pain

* Itching

* Weight loss

* Swelling in the legs and ankles

Diagnosis

Chronic biliary cirrhosis is diagnosed through a combination of blood tests, imaging tests, and a liver biopsy.

Treatment

There is no cure for chronic biliary cirrhosis, but the condition can be managed with medication, lifestyle changes, and sometimes surgery. Treatment may include:

* Medications to reduce inflammation and itching

* Antibiotics to treat infections

* Vitamins and supplements to improve nutrition

* Surgery to remove the gallbladder or relieve bile duct obstruction

Prognosis

The prognosis for chronic biliary cirrhosis depends on the severity of the disease and the underlying cause. The condition can lead to liver failure, which can be life-threatening. With proper treatment, most people with chronic biliary cirrhosis can live a full and productive life.
