What is the aftercare for a liver biopsy?
Immediately after the biopsy:
- You will be monitored for any complications, such as bleeding or pain.
- You may be given pain medication to help with any discomfort.
- You will be advised to rest for a few hours after the biopsy.
- You may be asked to avoid strenuous activity for a few days to a week.
For the next few days:
- You should watch for any signs of infection, such as fever, chills, or increased pain around the biopsy site.
- You should avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or aspirin, which can increase the risk of bleeding.
- You should limit your alcohol intake.
- You should follow your doctor's instructions for any other medications or activities you should avoid.
Long-term follow-up:
- You may need to have follow-up blood tests to monitor your liver function.
- Your doctor may recommend a repeat liver biopsy in the future to assess the progression of your liver disease.
