What are each part of your lungs called?
Lobes: Each lung is divided vertically into sections, called lobes. The right lung has three lobes: the upper lobe, middle lobe, and lower lobe. The left lung has two lobes: the upper lobe and lower lobe.
Bronchi: The trachea branches into two tubes, called bronchi, which enter the lungs. The right bronchus is shorter and wider than the left bronchus.
Bronchioles: The bronchi further branch into smaller tubes, called bronchioles, which lead to the alveoli.
Alveoli: The alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange takes place. Oxygen from the air passes into the alveoli and carbon dioxide from the blood passes out of the alveoli.
Pulmonary arteries: The pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
Pulmonary veins: The pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
Pleura: The pleura is a thin membrane that lines the lungs and the thoracic cavity. It helps to protect the lungs and allows them to move smoothly during breathing.
