Lung Cancer Caused by Cigarettes

Lung cancer is a disease that can be fatal if not treated. Smoking cigarettes can dramatically increase the chances of developing this condition.

Statistics

• According to the National Cancer Institute, 87 percent of deaths caused by lung cancer were due to smoking. It is also the leading cause of cancer related deaths in men and women.

Second-hand Smoke

• The National Cancer Institute states that more than 3,000 deaths each year are caused by lung cancer due to second-hand smoke.

Risk of Smoking

• Smokers dramatically increase their chances of developing lung cancer due to the chemicals found in cigarettes.

Treatments

• Unfortunately, there is no treatment that will definitely cure lung cancer. Some patients do survive, although the rate is low. Some of the treatments include surgery to remove the cancer, chemotherapy and radiation.

Prevention/Solution

• The Mayo Clinic states that smokers increase their chance of lung cancer with each cigarette. By quitting, smokers dramatically decrease their chances of developing this potentially fatal condition.
