What Is Adrenal Gland Adenoma?

An adrenal gland adenoma is a benign (noncancerous) tumor that develops in the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of each kidney. They produce hormones that help regulate the body's metabolism, blood pressure, and immune system.

Adrenal adenomas are usually small and do not cause any symptoms. However, in some cases, they can grow large and produce excessive amounts of hormones, which can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:

* High blood pressure

* Diabetes

* Weight gain

* Muscle weakness

* Thinning of the skin

* Easy bruising

* Excessive body hair

* Menstrual irregularities

* Infertility

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor to rule out an adrenal gland adenoma. Your doctor may order a variety of tests, including blood tests, urine tests, and imaging studies, to diagnose an adrenal gland adenoma.

Treatment for adrenal gland adenoma depends on the size of the tumor and the severity of the symptoms. Small, non-functioning adenomas usually do not require treatment. However, large adenomas or adenomas that are producing excessive amounts of hormones may need to be surgically removed.

Surgery for adrenal gland adenoma is usually successful in curing the condition. However, in some cases, the tumor may recur. If the tumor does recur, it may be necessary to undergo additional surgery or radiation therapy.
