What are lymphangiomas?

Lymphangiomas are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that arise from lymphatic vessels. They can occur anywhere in the body, but they are most commonly found in the head, neck, and extremities. Lymphangiomas are typically soft, squishy, and bluish in color. They can be small and barely noticeable, or they can be large and disfiguring.

There are three main types of lymphangiomas:

* Simple lymphangiomas are the most common type. They are usually small and located in the skin.

* Cavernous lymphangiomas are larger and more complex than simple lymphangiomas. They can involve deeper tissues, such as muscles and bones.

* Cystic lymphangiomas are filled with fluid-filled sacs. They can be very large and can cause significant swelling and pain.

Lymphangiomas are not typically painful, but they can cause problems if they grow too large or press on nearby structures. They can also be unsightly, which can lead to emotional distress.

Treatment for lymphangiomas depends on the size, location, and type of tumor. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, laser therapy, and sclerotherapy.

Lymphangiomas are relatively rare, but they can be a serious problem if they grow too large or cause complications. If you have a lymphangioma, it is important to see a doctor for evaluation and treatment.
