What is a superficial lymph node?

Superficial lymph nodes are those located just below the skin surface and are palpable under the normal skin as discrete or clustered palpable rounded/oval discrete structures. They are commonly found on the head, neck, axillae, inguinal regions and popliteal fossa. They are often the first site of metastasis from primary tumors located close by.
