What Is Dysmetria?

Dysmetria is a neurological condition characterized by difficulty judging the distance and/or force required to perform a movement. It is often seen in people who have damage to the cerebellum, a brain structure located at the back of the head that is responsible for coordinating movement.

Dysmetria can affect both the upper and lower extremities and can cause problems with reaching for objects, walking, and writing. People with dysmetria may also experience tremors, balance problems, and difficulty speaking.

There are several different types of dysmetria, including:

* Hypermetria: This is the most common type of dysmetria and occurs when a person overshoots the target of their movement.

>* For example, someone with hypermetria might reach too far for a cup of coffee and knock it over.

* Hypometria: This is the opposite of hypermetria and occurs when a person undershoots the target of their movement.

> * For example, someone with hypometria might reach for a cup of coffee but not reach it at all.

* Asynergia: This is a type of dysmetria that occurs when the coordination between different muscle groups is impaired.

> * For example, someone with asynergia might have difficulty walking because they are not able to coordinate the movements of their legs and arms.

* Intention tremor: This is a tremor that occurs during voluntary movement.

>* Intention tremors are often caused by damage to the cerebellum or the pathways that connect the cerebellum to the spinal cord.

Dysmetria can be a disabling condition, but there are a variety of treatments that can help to improve symptoms. These treatments may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.
