What is cystic sibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. It is caused by a mutation in the CFTR gene which leads to the production of thick, sticky mucus that can clog the airways and digestive system.
Symptoms of CF can include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Persistent coughing
- Wheezing
- Frequent chest infections
- Salty-tasting skin
- Poor growth and weight gain
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Infertility in men
- Nasal polyps
There is no cure for CF, but treatment can help to manage the symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatment may include:
- Chest physiotherapy
- Medications to thin mucus
- Antibiotics to treat infections
- Pancreatic enzyme supplements
- Nutritional support
- Lung transplant
Early diagnosis and treatment are important for improving the outlook for people with CF. With proper care, most people with CF can live long, productive lives.
