What are the causes of mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that develops in the cells that line the pleural and peritoneal cavities. The main cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibres. Asbestos is a mineral fibre that was widely used in building materials and insulation until it was banned in many countries due to its health risks. Exposure to asbestos can occur through inhalation or ingestion of the fibres. Asbestos fibres can become lodged in the lungs and cause inflammation and scarring, which can eventually lead to the development of mesothelioma.
Other risk factors for mesothelioma include:
- Family history of mesothelioma
- Exposure to other types of mineral fibres, such as erionite
- Exposure to radiation
It is important to note that most people who are exposed to asbestos do not develop mesothelioma. The risk of developing mesothelioma increases with the length and intensity of exposure to asbestos.
Mesothelioma is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, as it can be difficult to detect in its early stages. Treatment options for mesothelioma are limited, as it is an aggressive cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy can be used to treat mesothelioma, but the prognosis is often poor.
