What is mexadema?
Myxedema is a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones are responsible for regulating metabolism, so when levels are low, metabolism slows down and various symptoms can develop.
_Symptoms of myxedema include:
_
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Weight gain
- Cold intolerance
- Constipation
- Dry, flaky skin
- Hair loss
- Brittle nails
- Pale, puffy face
- Menstrual irregularities
- Infertility
- Depression
In severe cases, myxedema can lead to a condition called hypothyroid coma, which is a medical emergency. Symptoms of hypothyroid coma incluem loss of consciousness, low blood pressure, slow breathing, and low body temperature.
Myxedema is diagnosed with a blood test that measures thyroid hormone levels. Treatment typically involves taking thyroid hormone replacement medication to restore normal thyroid hormone levels and relieve symptoms.
