What is lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat in the lower extremities, often disproportionate to the rest of the body. It primarily affects women, although men can also be affected.

Lipedema is not caused by obesity or lifestyle factors. It is believed to be related to hormonal factors and genetic predisposition. However, the exact cause is not yet fully understood.

Symptoms of lipedema include:

- Symmetrical enlargement of the legs, buttocks, and/or arms

- Disproportionate fat distribution compared to the upper body

- Soft, doughy, and non-pitting edema (swelling)

- Pain, heaviness, and discomfort in the affected areas

- Easy bruising

- Difficulty with mobility and exercise

- Skin changes, such as dryness, thinning, and hyperpigmentation

Lipedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity, and it's important to seek evaluation from a healthcare professional who is familiar with the condition to ensure proper diagnosis and management. Treatment options for lipedema may include:

- Compression therapy

- Manual lymphatic drainage

- Exercise and healthy lifestyle modifications

- Weight loss (if indicated)

- Liposuction (surgical removal of excess fat)

Lipedema is a lifelong condition, but proper management can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
