Signs and Symptoms of Cancer-Related Anxiety

Cancer can be a very frightening discovery. Although cancer treatments are improving, especially if the cancer is detected early, it can be deadly. A diagnosis of cancer can cause extreme anxiety. According to the American Cancer Society, the patient may be afraid of death, of treatments, of pain, of the testing process or for their family. The severity of anxiety varies from patient to patient. It is important for the family to be able to talk openly and seek additional help from support groups or mental health professionals if the anxiety becomes unmanageable.
  1. Physical Symptoms

    • Cancer-related anxiety may manifest as physical symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat, tightness in the chest or shortness of breath. The patient may also experience digestive symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. The American Cancer Society notes that the patient may also experience dry mouth.

    Concentration Problems

    • Patients with cancer-related anxiety may also experience difficulty concentrating. This may include an inability to solve problems or an inability to stop worrying.

    Sleep Disturbance

    • Patients may experience disturbances in their sleep.This can include sleeping too much or being unable to sleep. It is not uncommon for patients to experience fatigue and exhaustion as well.

    Muscle Tension

    • Muscle tension is another symptom of cancer-related anxiety. This can be especially obvious in the face or appear in other muscles in the body. According to the American Cancer Society, patients may also shake or tremble, and be extremely restless and unable to sit still.

    Mood Changes

    • Anxiety may cause cancer patients to become very irritable and even experience angry outbursts. In addition, they may worry excessively.
