How many organs in your body can get cancer?
All of them.
Cancer, also called a malignant tumor or neoplasm, is a class of diseases characterized by uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in the body. This process causes the cells to lose their normal function, potentially affecting the surrounding tissue, organs, and even other parts of the body.
Virtually every organ in the human body can be affected by cancer, including:
- Bone cancer: Includes a variety of types, such as osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma.
- Brain cancer: Includes tumors originating from the brain tissue (primary brain tumors) and those that spread from other parts of the body (metastatic brain tumors).
- Breast cancer: Occurs in the breast tissue, primarily affecting women but also possible in men.
- Colon cancer: Also known as colorectal cancer, affects the colon or rectum.
- Kidney cancer: Often referred to as renal cell carcinoma or kidney adenocarcinoma.
- Leukemia: A cancer of blood-forming tissues in the bone marrow.
- Liver cancer: Typically referred to as hepatocellular carcinoma.
- Lung cancer: Includes various types, such as adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and small cell lung cancer.
- Melanoma: A cancer of the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin.
- Pancreatic cancer: Develops in the pancreas.
- Prostate cancer: Affects the prostate gland in males.
- Skin cancer: Includes various types, such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
- Stomach cancer: Also called gastric cancer.
- Testicular cancer: Occurs in the testicles.
- Thyroid cancer: Affects the thyroid gland in the neck.
- Uterine cancer: Also known as endometrial cancer, it starts in the lining of the uterus (endometrium).
This list is not exhaustive, as cancer can affect numerous other organs and tissues in the body, including the esophagus, adrenal glands, lymph nodes, and soft tissues.
