Facts About Kidney Cancer

Since the primary function of the kidneys is to filter and cleanse bodily fluids, specifically the blood and the urine, a diagnosis of cancer threatens the health of other vital organs. Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer, affecting the tubes within the kidneys. Transitional cell carcinoma targets the tubes that connect the kidney and bladder. Each year, the number of people diagnosed with kidney cancer increases, but the exact cause of this disease is not known. Recognizing key risk factors or making lifestyle changes may prevent this type of cancer.
  1. Symptoms

    • Early stages may not have obvious signs. As the tumor grows, blood in the urine, a lump in the kidney area and pain below the ribs may be present.

    Diagnosis

    • Ultrasound, CT and MRI scans are used to detect kidney cancer.

    Treatment

    • Surgery, the most common treatment, has several options, which includes removal of all or part of the kidney and surrounding tissue.

    Prognosis

    • Kidney cancer is curable if the cancer has not spread. Recovery is also dependent on the stage of cancer and the patient's age and health.

    Risk Factors

    • A family history of kidney cancer, smoking and exposure to asbestos increase the risk.
