Signs of Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is when cancerous cells are found in the tissues of your esophagus. The esophagus is the hollow tube that runs from your throat to your stomach. This type of cancer will start in one layer of the esophagus and spread to the other layers. There are several signs of esophageal cancer.
  1. Swallowing

    • One of the most common symptoms of esophageal cancer is painful swallowing. It may not be only painful to swallow, but also very difficult.

    Weight

    • It is very important to consult a doctor if you experience extreme weight loss. This is a sign of esophageal cancer, especially if other signs are present.

    Pain

    • Another sign of esophageal cancer is pain behind your breastbone. This pain actually will be in your esophagus, but it feels as though it is radiating through the chest.

    Cough

    • It is not uncommon for someone with esophageal cancer to have a cough and bouts of hoarseness.

    Heartburn

    • Another symptom of this type of cancer is frequent heartburn and indigestion. Any of these symptoms are cause for seeing a medical professional.
