Rectal Cancer Warning Signs
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), approximately 41,000 new cases of rectal cancer were diagnosed in 2008. Rectal cancer forms in the cells of the rectum, and it is distinct from colon cancer, which forms further up the intestinal tract in the colon. Even so, many doctors refer to both types of cancer as colorectal cancer.-
Diarrhea and Constipation
-
One of the first warning signs of rectal cancer is a sudden change in bowel habits, including a rapid onset of persistent diarrhea or constipation. These symptoms may occur in conjunction with a feeling that your bowels never fully empty.
Blood in the Stool
-
Blood in the stool may be a sign of rectal cancer. The NCI notes that blood in the stool caused by rectal cancer may be either a noticeable bright red or a very dark red.
Gas and Bloating
-
Gas pain and bloating happen to everyone at some point, but frequent and persistent gas pain, cramping or severe bloating may be a warning sign of rectal cancer.
Weight Loss and Fatigue
-
Unexplained weight loss and fatigue may also be warning signs of rectal cancer. The American Cancer Society warns that weight loss and fatigue may be caused by a variety of different health issues, but you should visit your doctor when these symptoms occur along with others on this list.
Vomiting
-
Persistent vomiting or feelings of nausea may be another warning sign of rectal cancer.
