What is pre ovarian cancer?

Precancerous conditions of the ovary are changes in the cells that line the ovaries that may develop into cancer. They are not cancerous yet but left untreated certain precancerous conditions may develop into invasive ovarian cancer.

The most common type of precancerous condition of the ovary is called a serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC). Other types include atypical hyperplasia and borderline tumors.

Precancerous conditions of the ovary are diagnosed in about 1 in 100 women who have a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries). They are more common in women who are overweight or obese, who are infertile, or who are postmenopausal.

Symptoms of a precancerous condition of the ovary may include:

* Abnormal vaginal bleeding

* Pelvic pain

* Nausea and vomiting

* Fatigue

* Weight loss

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor right away.

Treatment for a precancerous condition of the ovary may include:

* Surgery to remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes

* Chemotherapy

* Radiation therapy

The treatment plan will depend on the type of precancerous condition you have, the stage of the disease, and your age and overall health.
