What is cause of pancreas problems in dogs?
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is a common disorder of the digestive system in dogs. There are many potential causes of pancreatitis, including:
1) Idiopathic: In many cases, the exact cause of pancreatitis is unknown and it is referred to as idiopathic pancreatitis.
2) Dietary factors: A high-fat diet, sudden changes in diet, and certain foods (e.g., cooked bones) can all contribute to pancreatitis.
3) Medications: Some medications, such as corticosteroids, certain antibiotics, and chemotherapy drugs, can cause pancreatitis as a side effect.
4) Trauma: Blunt force trauma to the abdomen, such as from a car accident or other injury, can damage the pancreas and lead to pancreatitis.
5) Biliary tract disease: Obstruction of the bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine, can cause backup of bile into the pancreas and lead to pancreatitis.
6) Infections: Certain infections, such as bacterial infections (e.g., E. coli, Salmonella) and viral infections (e.g., canine distemper virus), can cause pancreatitis.
7) Autoimmune disorders: In some cases, pancreatitis can be caused by the immune system attacking the pancreas (immune-mediated pancreatitis).
8) Breed predisposition: Certain breeds of dogs, such as Miniature Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, and Fox Terriers, appear to be more prone to pancreatitis.
9) Obesity: Overweight or obese dogs are more at risk of developing pancreatitis.
