Ozone Treatment for Prostate Cancer
Ozone therapy is an alternative treatment for cancer. It consists of increasing the amount of oxygen in the area affected by the cancerous cells, the prostate in this case. The extra oxygen, according to proponents of this therapy, increases the ability of the body to fight cancer.-
Other Names
-
Ozone therapy is also commonly known as oxidative therapy, oxygen therapy, hyperoxygenation and hydrogen peroxide therapy.
Research
-
Reduced oxygen levels in prostate tumors can signal a long-term poor response to the biochemical treatments, according to a study presented at the 2009 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The risk of the cancer recurring is also greater for patients with low oxygen levels in the tumors, states the same study, a collaboration between the Josephine Ford Cancer Center at Henry Ford Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Methods
-
The treatment consists of injecting or inserting, under pressure, oxygen-releasing chemicals into a body opening. For the treatment of prostate cancer, urethral insufflation is one of the methods used. Another method is to combine the patient's blood with ozone and to inject it into the prostate.
Warning
-
This therapeutic method may be dangerous and, according to the American Cancer Society, patients have suffered severe side effects and even death after such ozone treatments.
Considerations
-
Ozone therapy should not be confused with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which involves sitting the patient inside a hyperbaric chamber where she can breathe pure oxygen.
