How Do I Protect My Family From Radiation After Prostate Seed Implantation?
Getting through cancer treatments can be difficult for anyone. After prostate seed implantation you might worry about how the radiation can affect those around you. The level of radiation in a prostate seed is surprisingly low, and with a bit of simple precaution you can ensure that no harm comes to your loved ones or caregivers.-
Who is at Risk?
-
Most people you encounter will not be threatened in any way by the radiation inside your body. However, some people are at special risk from radiation.
Any woman who is or might become pregnant should take extra precautions around you. The California Pacific Medical Center recommends that you keep at least 3 feet away from any pregnant woman to avoid possible danger to her or the fetus.
Take special care around young children; do not hold any younger than 18 months, and be very careful not to set them on your lap. Limit any exposure closer than 3 feet of children this age to no more than one hour a day. There is no danger to children farther than 3 feet.
Sexual activity should be limited in the first two weeks after the procedure. Once it is resumed, use a condom for two additional weeks to ensure the safety of your partner. You might notice that your semen is dark and discolored; this is normal and should pass with time.
Additional Worries
-
You might be worried about any other possible effects of the radiation. Your clothing, tableware, bedding, and bathroom facilities are safe for use by anyone else without special precautions. Items you touch or use will not become radioactive.
Shaking hands and kissing are both perfectly safe so long as you follow the space and time guidelines. Finally, your bodily waste is not radioactive, so no additional care is needed in its disposal.
