Are men with prostate cancer infertile?

Prostate cancer itself does not directly cause infertility. However, certain treatments for prostate cancer, such as surgery or radiation therapy, can potentially affect fertility.

* Radical prostatectomy, which is the surgical removal of the prostate gland, can damage the nerves and blood vessels that control erectile function and ejaculation. This can lead to erectile dysfunction (ED) and anejaculation, both of which can impact fertility.

* Radiation therapy, which uses high-energy X-rays or other forms of radiation to kill cancer cells, can also affect fertility. Radiation to the prostate can damage the DNA of sperm cells, leading to decreased sperm production or abnormal sperm function. The effects of radiation therapy on fertility can be temporary or permanent, depending on the dose and type of radiation used.

It's important for men with prostate cancer to discuss the potential impact of treatment on fertility with their doctor before starting treatment. There may be options available to preserve fertility, such as sperm banking or other assisted reproductive techniques.
