What Is Stage IV Prostate Cancer?

Stage IV prostate cancer is characterized by the metastasis (spread) of the disease to other parts of the body, including pelvic lymph nodes, bones or other areas.
Prognosis

Stage IV cancer is difficult to cure; however, according to the Shands Cancer Center at the University of Florida, many patients are able live for years with successful treatment.
Symptoms

If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, symptoms can include pelvic discomfort and swelling of the legs. If there has been metastasis to a patient's bones, symptoms may include spinal compressions, fractures or persistent bone pain.
Treatment Options

Treatment options include surgery, hormone therapy, external beam radiation combined with hormone therapy or participation in clinical trials. If these treatments are not helpful, chemotherapy may be an option.

According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for someone diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer is approximately 30 percent.
