Information on Stage IV Prostate Cancer

The prostate is a small gland that is shaped like a walnut and manufactures seminal fluid to support sperm. According to the Mayo Clinic, prostate cancer affects approximately 1 in 6 men in the United States. Stage IV prostate cancer is an advanced form of the disease.
  1. What Is Stage IV Prostate Cancer?

    • Stage IV prostate cancer is characterized by the metastasis (spread) of the disease to other parts of the body, including pelvic lymph nodes, bones or other areas.

    Prognosis

    • Stage IV cancer is difficult to cure; however, according to the Shands Cancer Center at the University of Florida, many patients are able live for years with successful treatment.

    Symptoms

    • If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, symptoms can include pelvic discomfort and swelling of the legs. If there has been metastasis to a patient's bones, symptoms may include spinal compressions, fractures or persistent bone pain.

    Treatment Options

    • Treatment options include surgery, hormone therapy, external beam radiation combined with hormone therapy or participation in clinical trials. If these treatments are not helpful, chemotherapy may be an option.

    Five-Year Survival Rate

    • According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for someone diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer is approximately 30 percent.
