Side Effects of Sorbitol

Sorbitol is an irrigation solution used to prevent infection during prostate and urinary tract surgeries. The drug works as a hexitol agent, in that it is effective in flushing out debris from the surgical area to help prevent complications and infection. As with most other surgical drugs, a series of side effects is associated with use.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Two common side effects generally occur as a result of using the drug: dry mouth and increased or decreased urination. Many people experience little to no side effects while using the drug, with only a small percentage actually reporting any discomfort of any kind.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Very rarely, severe side effects can occur as a result of using Sorbitol. These include hives, severe itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth or face, tightness of the chest, blurred vision, sudden changes in heart rate, chest pain, diarrhea, confusion, seizures, nausea, shortness of breath, vomiting and fatigue.

    Important Safety Information

    • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following circumstances apply before beginning use of the drug: if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding, if you are currently taking any prescription medication, if you have any allergies to medications or foods, or if you have an acid-base imbalance, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, or severe dehydration. If an overdose in medication is suspected, contact your local poison control center immediately and head to the emergency room.

    Usage

    • Sorbitol is meant for use solely by medical professionals during a surgical procedure and is administered through injection. If the vial contains particles or is discolored in any way, it should not be used. Once the vial is opened, administer the drug immediately to prevent contamination by bacteria. If you miss a dosage of the drug, contact your doctor immediately to correct the situation.

    Warning

    • If you experience any of the above side effects, please contact a medical professional immediately.

NEver use Sorbitol unless being administered by a medical professional. The drug should also never be used recreationally and is meant for surgical procedures only.

Consult your surgeon if you have any questions about the use of Sorbitol or any of its listed side effects.
