Prostate Biopsy Prep Procedures
A biopsy of the prostate is a common medical procedure done to determine the health of this small male gland. Often referred to as a "core needle" biopsy, tissue samples are extracted with a needle to be examined for any abnormal cells. If abnormal cells are present, it is a good indication of prostate cancer, and treatment options can then be discussed between you and your doctor. To prepare for such a procedure, there are certain steps to follow. But when your doctor has other methods of preparation, be sure to adhere to them.-

After your prostate biopsy is scheduled, you'll need to suspend the use of certain substances, both prescription and nonprescription, until the procedure is performed. And depending on the medical professional, this cessation will begin anywhere between one and two weeks prior to the biopsy. Start by suspending the use of any dietary supplements you are taking. This could include anything from your daily multivitamin to more holistic herbs like ginkgo biloba, garlic or even omega-3 fatty acid, which can act as natural blood thinners.
After you've stopped taking certain dietary supplements, discontinue the use of any NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen; anticoagulants, like warfarin; and antiplatelets, like cilostazol or clopidogrel. This is largely due to the effect these medications have on the ability of your blood to clot, so stop taking these substances five to ten days prior to your biopsy.
Either the night before or the day of your procedure, administer an enema. A standard enema is sufficient, so just pick one up from your neighborhood pharmacy, grocery store or "big box" chain. This should help to empty the rectum of any fecal matter, making it much easier to perform the procedure.
It's also necessary to take an antibiotic, such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin, prior to the prostate biopsy. In some situations, this antibiotic is taken the day before the procedure. In others, the medication is ingested only 30 to 60 minutes before the extraction of your tissue samples. You may even need to take the antibiotics for two consecutive days.
On the actual day of the biopsy, try to eat a light breakfast. Toast is often the food of choice, but your doctor may say that you can have a bowl of cereal or fruit. If you're confused about what you can and can't eat, just ask your doctor for a list of approved foods. There usually isn't a restriction on fluids, so you'll most likely be able to drink almost anything on the day of the procedure.
