What to Expect From IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy)
Before IMRT
Before beginning IMRT, you will meet with your radiation oncologist to discuss your treatment plan. This will include learning about the specific techniques that will be used, as well as the potential side effects of IMRT. You will also need to undergo a simulation session, during which you will lie on a treatment table and have a CT scan taken. This will help your doctor determine the precise location of your tumor and the surrounding healthy tissues that need to be avoided.
During IMRT
IMRT is typically delivered in multiple sessions over the course of several weeks. Each session will last for approximately 15-30 minutes. During treatment, you will lie on a treatment table and a machine will deliver the radiation beams to the target area. You will be closely monitored by your radiation therapist throughout the session and will be able to communicate with them at any time if you have any concerns.
After IMRT
After each IMRT session, you may experience some side effects, such as fatigue, skin irritation, or nausea. These side effects are typically mild and will resolve on their own within a few days. Your doctor may recommend ways to manage these side effects, such as taking pain medication or using cold compresses.
Success of IMRT
The success of IMRT depends on a number of factors, including the type of cancer being treated, the stage of the cancer, and the overall health of the patient. In general, IMRT is a very effective treatment for many types of cancer. IMRT can help to reduce tumor size, improve symptoms, and prolong survival.
