Questions to Ask a Radiation Doctor
Undergoing radiation treatment can be an emotionally and physically exhausting experience. While this can be a time of great stress in a patient's life, it is important to remember to discuss some important issues with your doctor. Many patients find that it is helpful to bring a friend or loved one to record the doctor's answers, as you may want to review them at a later date.-
Immediate Side Effects
-
Immediate side effects of radiation will differ depending on where the radiation is focused. Common side effects include redness of the skin near the site, itching and burning, as if the skin was exposed to the sun. Ask your doctor what to expect and request a list of creams and soaps that your doctor recommends using. Additional side effects can include fatigue and occasionally nausea.
Chronic Side Effects
-
Radiation treatment can have long-term side effects depending on the location of the area being treated. When radiation is administered to the neck and head, damage can occur to the salivary glands and/or the thyroid. Long-term side effects can also occur in the bowels or when radiation is administered to the brain. While it is important to discuss the potential for long-term side effects with your doctor, your oncologist will weigh these against the benefits of treating your condition.
Fertility
-
If you are of child-bearing age, it is important to discuss the effects radiation will have on fertility. Many treatments with radiation will not affect fertility, but some may. Ask your doctor about options for preserving fertility. Additionally, discuss with your doctor what is an appropriate time for child-bearing later in life.
Secondary Cancers
-
Radiation treatment may increase your risk for some secondary cancers. Your doctor will weigh these risks when deciding on treatment, but it is important that you discuss the potential dangers. Ask your doctor what preventative measures you can take. Also ask what forms of early detection are available, such as increased mammogram screenings.
