1
Be honest with your doctor before treatment. Tell your doctor about medicines you are taking, including aspirin, vitamins or herbs, as this may help avoid certain side effects down the road.
-
2
Eat a healthy and balanced diet. By eating the right foods before, during and after radiation therapy, you will feel better and stronger. Focusing on your diet is particularly important because the radiation therapy will lesson your appetite and alter your body's ability to tolerate certain foods and use nutrients.

Take care of your skin. Radiation therapy may irritate the skin in the treatment area. To reduce this irritation, the American Cancer Society recommends using only lukewarm water and mild soap, not wearing tight clothes over the treatment area and avoiding sun exposure for at least one year following treatment.

Deal with fatigue. Fatigue will set in during treatment and last for some time after treatment. To help deal with fatigue, do the following: prioritize your daily activities; ask loved ones for help; reduce stress; keep a journal of how you feel and show it to your doctor; balance rest and activity; and include plenty of protein and water in your diet.

Talk to your doctor about changing your treatment, if necessary. Most side effects go away in time. However, if you are experiencing severe side effects, your doctor may consider stopping treatment temporarily or changing the schedule or type of treatment.
