Melanomas are the most serious type of skin cancer. They can develop unnoticed and spread throughout the body. An implication of melanoma risk is that these cancers need to be identified early. Lifestyle modifications can reduce melanoma risk.

Unusual Moles

• According to the Mayo Clinic, skin moles with an unusual appearance that includes an asymmetrical shape, an irregular border and changes in color are more likely to cause melanoma. Melanoma may develop in moles that change over time and have a diameter that is greater than a quarter of an inch.

Hidden Melanomas

• Most melanomas develop on areas of the skin that are exposed to sunlight, but some of these cancers can grow unnoticed under a fingernail or in the mouth .

Diagnosis

• Annual skin exams are an important way to identify unusual moles. A skin biopsy of an abnormal mole can identify a melanoma.

Treatment

• Melanomas may be successfully treated by surgically removing the melanoma from the skin. Chemotherapy, radiation treatment and other cancer treatments may also be necessary in cases where the cancer has spread to other areas of the body.

Prevention

• The risk of melanoma can be reduced with lifestyle changes such as avoiding the outdoor sun between the middle of the morning and the middle of the afternoon, wearing sunscreen and wearing protective clothing.
