What Is Nummular Eczema?
Nummular eczema (also known discoid eczema, nummular dermatitis, and nummular prurigo) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin condition characterized by coin-shaped (nummular) red, scaly, itchy patches that appear on the skin.

Symptoms:
- Skin rash of round or oval red patches ranging in size from ¼ inch to 3 inches in diameter
- Itching, burning, and dryness of affected skin
- Crusting or oozing of the skin surface
- Lesions may come and go, or may merge together to form larger patches
- May appear anywhere on body but most common in shins, lower arms, and torso
Causes:
- Exact cause is unknown, but may be related to eczema or atopic dermatitis.
- Triggered by allergies, irritants, or medications
- Dry skin
- Changes in climate and weather
- Bacterial infections
- Stress
- Diabetes
- Genetics
Treatment:
- Topical corticosteroids to reduce itching and inflammation
- Calcineurin inhibitors such as tacrolimus (Protopic) or pimecrolimus (Elidel)
- Antihistamines and oral corticosteroids to relieve itching
- Wet wraps
- Light therapy
- Systemic immunomodulators such as methotrexate or cyclosporine
- Moisturizers to keep skin hydrated
- Avoid known triggers and irritants
Prevention:
- Maintain a healthy skin barrier by using gentle cleansers and moisturizers.
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure and take sun protection measures.
- Identify and manage triggers such as allergens, irritants, and stress.
