Does mild atypia lead to melanoma?

Mild atypia does not necessarily lead to melanoma, as it refers to subtle cellular changes that may be considered abnormal but are not definitively cancerous. Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that develops from melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. While some cases of melanoma may arise from pre-existing atypical nevi (moles), the presence of mild atypia alone does not indicate the development of melanoma. Atypical nevi that show concerning features or changes should be monitored regularly and evaluated by a dermatologist to detect any potential progression or transformation into melanoma.
