Skin Cancer Removal

Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells that is usually caused by the sun. The three types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Melanoma is the most serious of the three. Skin cancer removal is often possible.
  1. Mohs Micrographic Surgery

    • Mohs micrographic surgery involves cutting the tumor in thin layers. It is often used for skin cancer on the face.

    Excision

    • There are two types of excision used for removing skin cancer: simple and shave. Simple excision involves cutting the tumor as well as some surrounding skin. Shave excision involves shaving the abnormal cells with a blade.

    Electrodesiccation and Curettage

    • Electrodesiccation and curettage involves cutting the tumor from the skin with a tool called a curette and then sending an electric current to the area to destroy remaining cancer cells.

    Cryosurgery

    • Cryosurgery, also called cryotherapy, involves freezing and destroying the abnormal cells.

    Laser surgery

    • Laser surgery involves using a laser beam to remove a tumor on the skin's surface.

    Dermabrasion

    • Dermabrasion involves sanding the top layer of skin with a rotating wheel or small particles to remove abnormal cells.
